Just this week, The Media Leader’s columnist Nick Manning flagged a scam ad featuring the UK’s celebrity “money saving expert” Martin Lewis. Lewis had settled a court dispute with Facebook in 2019 over its repeated failure to prevent scam ads featuring his image and name from appearing. In this context, ‘downstream’ refers to activities post-launch of the foundation model and activities that build on a foundation model. Consideration should also be given to establishing clear and appropriate accountability lines throughout the company up to senior management, and having in place people with the right skills, expertise, experience and information to support and advise. Recruitment, talent pipeline management and genrative ai staff training will be aspects to consider in planning for effective AI risk management. Generative AI systems may be processing legally or commercially sensitive data and may be deployed in the context of regulated or operationally critical processes, with varying degrees of human involvement.

But artificial intelligence (AI) or “machine learning” models have been evolving for a while. A cursory search of the internet will show you hundreds of articles and videos explaining how to get the most out of generative AI. For example, they can provide language translation, grammar correction, or suggest alternative phrasing in writing exercises.

Foundation models require an extremely large corpus of training data, and acquiring that data is a significant undertaking. That data is cleaned and processed, sometimes by the company that develops the model, other times by another company. As well as ‘foundation model’ and ‘GPAI’, there are other related terms used to describe similar models.
